The Condition

Why Surgical Scars Look Different

When skin is cut, the body closes the wound with new collagen laid down in a different pattern from the skin around it. That repair tissue can sit raised, sunken, wider, redder or darker than its surroundings.

A scar keeps changing for a year or more. Genetics, skin tone, incision site, wound tension and sun exposure all shape how it finally looks, and collagen-remodeling treatments help many scars blend in.

Who It Helps

Scars We Treat

We treat healed scars from surgery and injury that still stand out in texture, color or width.

01

Raised or Thickened

Firm, ridged scars that sit above the skin line.

02

Sunken or Uneven

Depressed scars that dip below the surface and catch light and shadow.

03

Red or Dark

Scars that stay pink, red or darker than your natural tone.

04

Wide or Stretched

Incisions that spread as they healed, often over joints.

05

Common Surgery Sites

Knee and joint replacement, C-section, breast surgery and mole removal.

06

Older, Mature Scars

Years-old scars can still improve, though results vary.

Our Technology

Matching the Treatment to the Scar

We choose by the scar's age, texture, color and location, and many plans combine two treatments, such as microneedling for texture with laser for redness.

TreatmentHow it worksBest suited to
SkinPen MicroneedlingThe FDA-cleared SkinPen creates micro-channels that prompt the skin to rebuild scar collagen.Raised, sunken or uneven texture.
Aerolase LaserLaser resurfacing smooths rough texture, and Aerolase targets redness and discoloration in and around the scar, with settings chosen for your skin type.Pink, red or darkened scars.
PRP/PRF BoostYour own platelet-rich plasma or fibrin, added to microneedling, delivers growth factors that support collagen production.Stubborn texture during a microneedling series.
NeoGen PlasmaNitrogen plasma energy remodels collagen in the deeper layers of the skin while protecting the surface.Textured scars on the face and body.
What to Expect

From Healed Incision to Final Result

  1. Wait for Full Healing

The incision must be fully closed first, and very recent scars may need more time. Check timing with your surgeon.

  2. Scar Assessment

Your provider examines the scar, reviews your medical history and explains how much change is realistic.

  3. Preparation

We cleanse the area and apply numbing cream. For a PRP/PRF Boost, a small blood sample is drawn and processed.

  4. Treatment Session

We adjust depth and energy to the scar and your skin. A microneedling session usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes.

  5. Aftercare and Your Series

Temporary redness and sensitivity are normal for a few days. Most scars need several sessions spaced weeks apart.

Survivors and Reconstruction

Scars After Breast Cancer Surgery

Scars from a lumpectomy, mastectomy or reconstruction can be treated much like other surgical scars once your surgeon has cleared the area.

We plan these visits gently and at your pace, choosing the least aggressive treatment that can help and timing sessions around your recovery and any further surgery.

FAQ

Surgical Scar Questions

Do scars from surgery ever go away?

A surgical scar never disappears completely, but it keeps changing for a year or more. Collagen-remodeling treatments can make many scars flatter, smoother and closer to your skin tone.

How soon after surgery can I start scar treatment?

The wound must be fully healed first. Your provider will recommend timing, and you should also check with your surgeon.

What are the three types of scars?

Hypertrophic scars are raised but stay within the incision line, keloids grow beyond it, and atrophic scars sit below the surface as a dent. The type decides which treatment comes first.

What scar cream helps after surgery?

Once the incision has closed, silicone gel is a common first step for keeping a new scar flat and hydrated. We offer our own Scar Silicone Gel and pair it with daily sun protection.

Is surgical scar treatment painful?

Topical numbing cream is applied before microneedling and laser treatments. Most patients feel only mild discomfort.

Can older scars or scars on the legs be treated?

Yes. Mature scars can still improve with collagen remodeling, and we treat scars on the legs, arms, abdomen and chest as well as the face. Results vary by scar type.
