We treat thick, yellowed and brittle nails with the Aerolase Neo laser in our Portland office, working through the nail itself so there are no oral antifungal pills involved.

See Your Potential
This is one of our own patients, photographed before laser treatment and again once new nail had grown in. The discolored, thickened big toenail was gradually replaced by clearer nail as it grew out.
How quickly you see this depends on how many nails are involved, how long the infection has been there and how fast your nails grow.
More results are in the Onychomycosis / Fungal Nails section of our before and after gallery.
Nail fungus, or onychomycosis, is a fungal infection of the nail and the nail bed beneath it. It most often starts in the toenails, because shoes, gyms and pool decks keep feet warm and damp. The infection lives under and inside the nail plate, which is why it clears slowly and can return.
Yellow, brown or white patches, often starting at the tip or the side of the nail.
A nail that grows thicker and harder to trim, and may press inside the shoe.
Brittle, ragged or powdery edges that break off when the nail is cut.
The nail separates from the skin underneath, leaving a gap that collects debris.
Ridges, curving or an uneven surface where the nail used to be smooth.
A second or third nail changing the same way, or the skin between the toes becoming involved.
Book an assessment when a nail changes color or thickness and does not grow out on its own. If you have diabetes, poor circulation or a weakened immune system, or the toe is painful, red or swollen, see your physician promptly, since those situations need medical care first.

The Aerolase Neo delivers short pulses of laser energy through the nail plate to the infected tissue beneath it. We pass the handpiece over each affected nail and the skin around it, so the edges where fungus collects are treated as well.
Nail fungus is usually treated in one of three ways. The right choice depends on how many nails are involved, how advanced the infection is and your health history.
| Aerolase Neo Laser | Oral Antifungals | Topical Solutions | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How It Is Given | Short in-office laser sessions | Prescription tablets | Medicated lacquer or solution brushed on the nail |
| Daily Routine | Foot hygiene habits only | A pill every day, usually for several months | Applied every day, often for many months |
| Medication | None | Taken by mouth and processed by the body | Applied to the nail surface |
| Often Chosen By | Patients who want to avoid oral medication | Patients under a physician's care for widespread infection | Patients with mild, early changes in thinner nails |
At your consultation we review what you have already tried and whether laser treatment fits your nails.
Laser treatment for nail fungus is a series of short visits followed by months of new growth. Here is how the plan unfolds.
We examine the affected nails, review your history and past treatments, and confirm that laser is right for you.
Nails are cleaned and polish is removed so the laser reaches the nail and nail bed evenly.
The Aerolase Neo is passed over each affected nail and the surrounding skin while you relax.
Most patients need a series of sessions. We set the number by how many nails are involved and how severe the infection is.
Clearer nail appears at the base and moves forward. Replacing a whole big toenail can take a year or longer.
The same warm, damp conditions that started the infection can bring it back. Every patient leaves with a home plan, and these are the habits it is built on.

Our current menu is on the medspa pricing page. Many patients spread the cost of a treatment series with monthly payments through Cherry.
Answers to what patients ask us most before starting laser treatment.
Most patients feel only gentle warmth as the laser passes over the nail. No anesthesia is needed, and sessions are short.
It depends on how many nails are affected and how advanced the infection is. Most patients need a series of sessions. We set the number at your consultation after examining your nails.
The laser does not change the damaged nail that is already there. Clearer nail appears at the base and moves forward as it grows. Toenails grow slowly, so improvement shows over several months, and replacing a whole big toenail can take a year or longer.
Yes. We evaluate both fingernails and toenails for laser treatment. Fingernails grow faster than toenails, so clearer nail usually shows sooner.
Yes. Most patients walk out and return to their normal activities right after a session. There is no dressing to wear and nothing to keep dry.
Yes, reinfection is possible because fungus lives in shoes, socks and damp floors. Following your home care plan lowers the risk. A follow-up visit lets us check new growth and treat any early return.
We are at 5050 NE Hoyt St, Suite 626, Portland, OR 97213, in the Providence Plaza building. It sits across the street from Providence Hospital, not inside the hospital building.
We examine your nails, explain your options plainly and map out a laser series that fits your schedule.
